The need for gynecological exams and STIs testing was emphasized by all female sex
workers who participated in the discussion.
We all have to do STIs testing, when you are with a client, you have no idea who you are
dealing with. At first sight he may seem clean and handsome, but it doesn’t mean he is
healthy. – female sex worker.
Services which have been described as less necessary include the following:
vaccination, diagnosis and treatment of Viral Hepatitis, pre and post counseling
HIV testing, information, education and counseling related to HIV prevention
amongst sex workers, social support for issues related to HIV/AIDS, and the
opportunity for volunteering and participation in the development of the sex
workers’ movement. When it comes to the perception of necessity regarding
these services, we need to mention that their distorted perception is mainly due
to the sex workers’ lack of knowledge in terms of the purpose and the benefit of
those. These services are available; however, the vast majority fails to recognize
them, even though they have used those services provided by civil organizations.
The focus group participants have stated that the following services are readily
available for sex workers: HIV testing, pre and post counseling HIV testing, services
by medical specialists, out of which the gynecological and dermatovenereological
services provided by HERA (“I Want to Know” Youth Center – Vodno and “Shuto
Orizari” Youth Center) are most commonly utilized, services by social workers, legal
aid, provision of condoms and lubricants, information, education and counseling
regarding issues related to HIV prevention amongst sex workers, services by
