TRAVELING The Sea Pearl of Southern Russia sea! You don`t even have to swim to enjoy it as it is everywhere and leaves salt on the lips when you breathe in the air. You hear the sounds of the surf, screams of seagulls and calm down. The world becomes a fairy- tale and you like Alexander Grin`s heroine, Assole, can spend hours on the coast listening to the wind in your hair and waiting for the prince to appear on a beautiful ship with the red sails arising like the dawn over the waves. I should say that the outskirts of Sevastopol are very peaceful but a downtown is full of tourists and attractions. If you want to get there you need to buy a steamer ticket, even if you want to go there by car. So, you can imagine how big it should be to accommodate a dozen cars and hundreds of people! When you reach the city center you will see something incredible: big beautiful houses and well- known sights! The one I was impressed with most of all is called “the Monument to the scuttled ships”. It towers above the sea and symbolizes the spirit of the city. It was built to bar the entrance to the harbor for the naval ships of England, France and Turkey during the Crimean War and the first defense of Sevastopol. It consists of the artificial granite cliff and on top of it there is a bronze sculpture of the two-headed eagle with widespread wings facing the sea, which holds in its beak the laurel wreath of glory and the naval anchor. Lower on the cliff, the bronze mast of the sailing- ship is attached. On the side of the pedestal facing the seafront there is a memorial plaque with the relief map of the Sevastopol harbor and marked areas where the ships were scuttled. Unfortunately, during the Great Patriotic war the Monument was damaged and restored in 1961. Since that time the Monument is an integral part of the memorial complex created to mark the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Sevastopol and is one of the symbols of the Hero City of Sevastopol. One more symbol of this city is a dolphin. Wandering about the city center you will definitely drop in the dolphinarium to see these amazing animals. The performance we were lucky to attend was wonderful! Beautiful and smart dolphins, cute seals and brazen seagulls showed various tricks and made everyone applaud and freeze in astonishment. We visited a lot of interesting places and the sea followed us everywhere. In conclusion I`d like to say that this summer was wonderful! I met a lot of new people, went sightseeing and had a rest.
