СОНЕТ О СУЕТЕ
A SONNET ON VANITY
"Все суета и суета сует", —
Сказал пророк потомкам в назиданье,
И эхо загремело в мирозданьи
И отдается много тысяч лет.
"Vanity, vanity, all is vanity," —
Disciples exhorting, the prophet said.
Its echo thundered through the land
Reverberating still millenia anon.
Глупец, мудрец, прагматик и поэт
В пылу борьбы, в покое недеянья
По-разному приходят к осознанью:
"Все суета и суета сует".
The wise, the fool, pragmatacist and poet,
In heat of battle or in place of rest,
Come variously to this same awareness:
"Vanity, vanity, all is vanity."
"Но есть ли вечное в существованьи
На самой суетливой из планет?" —
Спросил я. И возник из подсознанья
"But isn't there something eternal
On this the vainest of all planets?" —
I asked. And from subconsciousness arose
Единственный и правильный ответ:
"Твори добро, посей любовь и знанье,
Все остальное — суета сует".
The only possible and right reply:
"Do good, both love and knowledge sow,
The rest is vanity of vanities you know."

SONNET ABOUT A TRUE TEACHER
Богата древней мудростью Земля,
Различны и пестры пути познанья,
Которыми в храм подлинного знанья
Ведут идущих их учителя:
The Earth is rich in ancient wisdom,
And ways of knowing — colorful and varied.
Along them to the temple of true knowledge
Seekers are guided by their teachers:
Один искусно учит простоте,
Другой — искусству следовать примеру,
А третий превозносит только веру,
Уподобляя разум суете.
One teacher teaches how to be simple, Another — how to follow art's example,
A third proclaims that faith is All,
Comparing reason to confusion.
Но настоящий, истинный учитель
Совсем иными тропами ведет,
И ученик в храм мудрости войдет
But a real and true teacher
Leads in a very different way,
And students enter wisdom's temple
Не как проситель или праздный зритель.
Но где же тот мудрец, который нам
Войти поможет в собственный наш храм?
Not as spectators or inquirers.
But where is that wisest one who will
Aid our entrance to the temple that's within?
