SUMMARY
Digital colour orthoimages (orthorectified aerial
photograph) are widely used for developing FMPs (forest
management plan) for the purposes of tree species
identification and interpretation of forest stands. A graphic
and an attribute database were built for forest interpretation
using geographic information system (GIS). The attribute
database information on tree species and the structure of the
stands was analyzed. Four tree species in five age stages
were selected for further interpretation and deciphering. An
interpretation key guide created. It consists of specialized
interpretation samples and is organized by tree species,
origin, age class, and age group. Each interpretation key
has associated textual descriptions and real photos of the
habitat. This methodology yielded accurate forest stands
vector data and helped the process of mapping and creating
a digital model of the FMP.
