Budget for climate-policy making: International Friends of Nature and its member
organisations should earmark a fixed part of their budgets for climate-policy activities.
Joint activities of the Green 10: The IFN is a member of the Green 10 – the plat-
form constituted by the ten largest European environmental organisations: Its climate
policy should, therefore, be leveraged at EU-level. The Green 10 are seeking to step
up their cooperation with the European Environmental Bureau (EEB) and with the
Climate Action Network Europe (CAN-E).
Networking with civil society organisations outside the EU: Within the framework
of the Green 10, IFN is seeking to network increasingly with civil society climate pro-
tection organisations in the USA, Canada, Australia, and Japan, with the objective of
championing a consolidated and forceful civil-society position of the above-average
industrialised emitters at the post-Kyoto negotiations (e.g. Copenhagen 2009). In this
context, the Climate Action Network International could serve as a mediating platform.
In the medium term, climate-policy networking is to be enhanced with non-
governmental organisations in threshold countries (China, India, Brazil, etc.), in the
long term, the network should also include organisations in developing countries – in
particular our member and partner organisations. In the short term, cooperation on
climate-change adaptation measures should be launched with non-governmental or-
ganisations in developing countries.
Policy-making at national level: Political demands framed at the international and
European level should be disseminated by Friends-of-Nature organisations to the
public and to policy-makers in their own countries. Efforts should be made to network
with other non-governmental organisations active at the national level.
e. Office ecology
Electricity from renewable energy sources: Wherever available, electricity gener-
ated exclusively from renewable energy sources should be used to power the office
premises of Friends-of-Nature organisations.
Energy saving plan for office operation: Based on actual/target analyses and con-
tinuous energy consumption monitoring, an energy saving plan should be drawn up
for every Friends-of-Nature office. The plan should indicate internal measures de-
signed to boost energy efficiency.
Commuting: Staff using public transport for trips to and from their workplace should
receive benefits as a reward (e.g. contribution to the ticket price).
Procurement: Office material should be procured from regional producers / providers,
in order to exclude long haulage distances.
Printing material: Printing material should be produced exclusively by businesses
complying with strict ecological standards (e.g. guideline for low-polluting printing ma-
terial under the Austrian Ecolabel). Major printing jobs should be awarded either to
print shops that compensate their emissions or that donate funds to reliable offset
providers for the compensation of residual emissions caused by production and dis-
tribution.
