As much Natur-
Heat energy losses can be substantially
reduced by technical and organisational measures. All existing Friends-of-Nature
houses are to be subjected to an analysis of their building substance.
By 2012, energy certificates in compliance with the EU Directive on the Energy Per-
formance of Buildings as well as concrete plans for improving thermal efficiency,
based on individual cost/benefit analyses, should be on hand for each Friends-of-
Nature house. By this point in time, retrofitting for improved thermal efficiency should
be completed in one third of all Friends-of-Nature houses. Retrofitting for improved
thermal efficiency should be a standard part of any planned investments and tech-
nologies for heat recovery should be part of the retrofitting measures.
Renewable energy sources: An energy-push-campaign should enable many
Friends-of-Nature houses to meet their energy requirement from renewable sources
of energy, either through the direct use of solar energy (photovoltaics and solar heat),
wind, water, biomass (split logs, woodchips or pellets) and geothermal heat (heat
pumps) or – in the case of external supply – should be obtained from providers of
green electricity. By 2020, the percentage share of renewable energy sources ought
to have risen to at least 90%.
Energy efficient operation: Relying on specialist advice, individual energy saving
programmes are to be drawn up for each Friends-of-Nature house, including, inter
alia, measures designed to regulate energy consumption, to optimise lighting installa-
tions, to regulate hot water consumption or suggestions for purchasing energy-
efficient equipment.
Regional suppliers: Material, products and services required for the construction,
maintenance and operation of Friends-of-Nature houses should – if available – be
purchased exclusively in the region, so as to avoid energy-intensive interim and end
haulage.
Support to trailblazers: Friends-of-Nature houses that take the lead should be spe-
cially promoted and awareness of their achievements should be raised also among
non-members.
c. Travel and mobility
Passenger transport, especially by car and plane, which is generated by tourism, is a
major contributory factor to climate change. Shifting the inevitable transport volume to
rail and bus must, therefore, be a top priority when planning Friends-of-Nature activi-
ties. Whenever there is no alternative to flying, donations to climate-friendly projects
should be made through reliable offset providers.
Planning package and group tours: Whenever possible and feasible, energy effi-
cient means of transport should be chosen for package and group tours offered or
organised by Friends of Nature. No flights should be offered to destinations at dis-
tances below 800 km. For destinations at greater distances, there should be a rea-
