On the Way to Aigosthena (Aspropyrgos –
Vilia – Vathichori Towers – Aigosthena)

Aspropyrgos Tower
The ruins of the Francish rule period
tower are on the Athens – Corinth
Old National Road. They consist of big
white marble cubes, originally from
neighboring ancient burial monuments
that were built-in on the structure.
Because of their white color, the tower
gave the city its name, White Tower –
Aspropyrgos in Greek.
Square and Round Towers
(Mikro and Megalo
Vathichori, Megara)
Aspropyrgos Tower. Because of
the white colored stone used in its
construction, the tower gave its name
to the city, called today Aspropyrgos –
White Tower in Greek.
Landmarks of Vathichori area two
ancient towers, called respectively
“Round” and “Square”, and they are
among the best preserved ancient
monuments. The Square one, with
sides measuring 5.5 m. and 10 m. high is
about 1 km away SE of the Round One,
on the rural road to Mikro Vathichori. It
is built with local red limestone, in the
isodomiic masonry style. The Round
Tower, built in the same way, is located
on the northern edge of Megalo
Vathichori. It has a diameter of 6.2 m
and a height of 12.5 m. They were used
to guard this agricultural area in times
of peace and war until the Francish and
Turkish ocuppations.
