Agricultural University of Athens Botanical Garden, on Hiera Odos
56 Spyrou Patsi st. and Hiera Odos
In 4 th century BCE, Aristoteles’ student Theofrastos creates by Ilissos River, near Aristoteles’ Lyceum,
the first Botanical Garden in the world. The next botanical garden of the city is only created by Κ. Ν.
Fraas in 1835, on the Sacred Way, in an area once belonging to the Ottoman ruler of Athens, Hasecki,
next to Kifissos River.
The urban landscape of Western Athens is characterized by the dialectical interaction between
nature and industrial ruins, and this is a typical example. Located at the heart of “industrial” Elaionas,
it boasts 200 species of plants, trees and bushes. The small pond with the aquatic plants adds to the
charm of the garden. As part of the Agricultural University though, the garden is research-oriented
and is rarely open to the public.
