Metro and its
“museums“: an
alternative
cultural route
of the Sacred
Way
“Under the traces of the ancient Sacred Way, with the digging
for the metro tunnel, a parallel underground road opened, which
traverses the western suburbs from Kerameikos to Agia Marina”
(G. Alexopoulos, at the meeting "History - Environment -
Culture and Sustainable Development in West Athens, Attica"
on the “Go West – Discover West Athens, Attica” program,
December 2018). Metro line 3 follows the overground trace
of the ancient Sacred Way connecting the western suburbs to
Athens Airport. With the exception of Kerameikos station the
stations of Elaionas, Aigaleo and Agia Marina are located on
the modern Sacred Way, Hiera Odos. A stretch of the ancient road
is visible in Elaionas and Aigaleo.
Corridors with permanent exhibition of important artefacts
found during excavations are exhibited inside the stations, while
all stations display especially designed works of modern art.
