SETTING THE SCENE THE POLICY CONTEXT The case studies presented in this publication aim to document examples of practices showing how mainstream child protection services and the provision of quality, family and community-based care can provide effective responses to the specific needs of refugee and migrant children, in particular those who are unac- companied or separated, and therefore particularly vulnerable. As organisations working to promote children’s rights, we found it valuable to share our knowledge and experience – both at the policy and at the practice level – to engage with experts in migra- tion to build synergies and ensure that valuable lessons learned on the reform of child protection systems and the provision of quality alternative care could benefit also migrant and refugee children coming to Europe, to ensure that all children can enjoy their rights on an equal basis, irrespective of their migration status.
