I welcome Eurochild and SOS Children’s
Villages’ compendium of inspiring practices
on migrant and refugee children in Europe.
The 12 April 2017 European Commission (EC)
Communication on the protection of children
in migration acknowledged that, despite the
many challenges still remaining, there is also
a wealth of knowledge and good practice in
the Member States which needs to be shared
at local and national level. As announced in
the Communication, the Commission will
collect and disseminate good practices on
the protection of children in migration via an
online database now in development, and this
compendium serves as a precursor, covering a
range of situations from reception through to
integration, as well as guardianship, advocacy
and legal advice, in several Member States.
Efforts to capture child-rights based good prac-
tice and share it widely with a view to inspiring
similar or even better runoffs are very valuable,
especially when resources are finite. Sharing
good practice can also help to ensure mutual
trust from one country to another and beyond
the descriptions of the context and practice,
the sections on lessons learned, main strengths
and key challenges generously help other
organisations and authorities in a very practical
expression of European solidarity.
