SAINT CATHERINE

St. Catherine, was built in the 13th or 14oai. A.D. and is located in the northwest side of the Upper Town. The interior of the church hosts important Byzantine frescoes of the 14th century. From its main characteristics is covered with elaborate stone exterior walls of the temple. A closer look at the main building will certainly make an impression as they reveal the elaborate beautifully colored marbles that have been added! The interior design itself causes great interest as important parts were covered by the Ottomans after the conversion of the church into a mosque. When the 1946 - 1951 extensive maintenance work took place inside the church, revealed important parts of earlier frescos that were left covered for centuries.
