as a big spaceship requires more energy and is more difficult to maneuver during moon landing and takeoff . The lunar module was also called “ eagle ”
The Apollo 11 started at 16 July 1969 and ended 8 days later at 24 July 1969 . Here are the different parts of the mission and the duration of each :
• July 16 → The Saturn 5 rocket was launched . This was the start of its journey
• July 16-19 → The rocket was traveling from earth to moon and finally got in its orbit
• July 20 → The “ eagle ” gets detached from the main spaceship and starts transporting Armstrong and Aldrin to the moon surface
• July 21 → The “ eagle ” lands on the moon
• July 21 21:24 UTC → The “ eagle ” reattached to the Saturn 5 spaceship . After transferring the two astronauts to the Saturn 5 , the “ eagle ” was dumped in the moon orbit finally colliding with its surface same days later
• July 22-24 → The spaceship was returning from moon to earth
• July 24 → The final landing occurred in the pacific ocean . Special parachutes were used to limit the spaceship ’ s velocity
Contrary to popular belief , the Apollo 11 mission was not executed with no errors or risks of fatally failing . There were in fact two times when the mission almost failed and the tragedy was barely avoided .
The first one was during the landing of the “ eagle ”. The spaceship computer threw in fact several errors about a malfunction that wouldn ’ t allow it to process the data from its sensors fast enough . As a result , it was diverted from each planned landing location and almost landed on a rocky surface that would render it unable to take off again . At the end , Armstrong took control of the spaceship and barely succeeded in landing it manually on an appropriate surface .
The second incident was caused when Aldrin accidentally damaged the system used for the take off of the “ eagle ”. At the end , Armstrong managed to fix it and make the spaceship take off .
The Apollo 11 mission was extremely important . The astronauts who landed on the moon placed an American flag on it and left there medals for all the previous astronauts that had died during their missions . They also took more than 20kg of samples from the moon surface to be examined back on earth . Finally , they installed a seismograph as well as a reflector that would be used for measuring the moon ’ s distance from the earth .
