If I was the mayor of Athens , what would I change ?
Nowadays , Athens faces numerous environment-related problems , but very few ( if any ) measures have been taken , or even suggested , in order to solve them .
Probably the least known environmental issue the city faces , is a phenomenon known as Urban Heat Island ( UHI for short ). UHI occurs when a city experiences much warmer temperatures than nearby rural areas ( the countryside , or in this case , the suburbs ).
Due to the buildings being closer together and the lack of green spaces ( parks etc .) the air in the city center cannot “ escape ” from the streets and thus , is not being renewed , causing it to also become hotter . Additionally , harmful gases from the exhausts of vehicles become trapped in the air , making it unhealthy .
There are various methods available to combat UHI . Obviously , more parks need to be built . So as to free space in the city center , old buildings which are now inhabitable could be demolished and be replaced by “ green spots ”, a network of small forests ( parks ) which would not only help counter UHI , but also make the city more aesthetically beautiful , also encouraging wildlife to return to Athens .
In addition , I believe that laws ought to be introduced which nudge citizens to color their roofs white or repaint them with a light color . That way , the buildings ’ surfaces won ’ t absorb heat ( one of the main causes of UHI ) but instead reflect it , since lighter tints are generally more reflective .
Another set of measures that could be taken , should encourage the usage of public transport , whether that is through making the tickets cheaper , or by expanding the transport network ( increasing the number of stations ), so people can get around the city exclusively by using them , essentially replacing private vehicles . This would , as a result , reduce the number of CO2 emissions caused by cars and lorries and thus making the air cleaner .
