Experts’ Views on Websites and Web Apps
Our lives revolve around web sites so much so that thinking about a life without them seems impossibility. The last few decades have seen a dramatic growth of the Internet and it has become hard to imagine computer operation without an Internet connection.
The last few years have also seen the growth of yet another terminology, “the Web App”. By understanding the meaning of “web app” and its differentiation from a “web site” make us better users or for that matter better developers.
The difference between Web sites and Web apps
Before the coming of “Web Apps”, the word “applications” had been used to mean advanced user capabilities and interactions. Some of these applications include Webmail, Google Docs and Google Maps.
Today web sites with single pages are also referred to as web apps, but it is the task focus that is more taken into consideration than the technology behind it.
One can see the use of “web apps” in smart phones where specific task of making a call or mail checking requires the use of apps for result.
It may be argued that a simple classification could be that web site is a read-only page whereas Mobile app solutions are read-write type. However, it is a simplification. A better definition could be web sites as consumption whereas web apps are meant for creation.
