The descent was a joy. The fog lifted, my stomach settled, and we ran
like children through mud piles, making it back to the base by midday.
With a warm shower, a meal, and warmer temperatures at the
bottom, the familiar thrill of a hike returned.
Years later, this hike parallels my travels across Africa. The unchartered
path, the elements, and the scarcity are reoccurring frustrations.
However, that sense of elation, the sheer rugged beauty, and eventual
sense of longing to return never does seem to cease – it carries me
back across Africa year after year and makes me wonder how I have
showed up for yet another hike, completely unprepared.
