Equipped with a knapsack full of jam, stale bread, and a plaid Maasai
blanket, Eric, Chris and I arrived with tired eyes to the meeting point at the
base of Mount Karisimbi. Having decided only the day before to hike the
highest mountain in the Virunga National Park, Rwanda, we were
unprepared, to put it lightly. Our unpreparedness became apparent when
a Swiss hiker arrived with full hiking gear. It became obvious when our 7man military escort arrived with rifles and a bazooka – whether it was for
the wildlife or rebels, we were never quite sure. But, I felt most
unprepared when Chris owned up to having stashed two extra Mars bars in
his bag, fearing our rations would be insufficient.
… And we were off.
