Having decided only the day before to hike the highest mountain in the Virunga National Park, Rwanda, we were unprepared, to put it lightly. Our unpreparedness became apparent when a Swiss hiker arrived with full hiking gear. It became obvious when our 7man military escort arrived with rifles and a bazooka – whether it was for the wildlife or rebels, we were never quite sure. But, I felt most unprepared when Chris owned up to having stashed two extra Mars bars in his bag, fearing our rations would be insufficient. … And we were off.
