Abstract: The concept of the adaptive façade refers to the design of a building that is able to respond
to environmental conditions in real time by allowing parts of its envelope to move. One building
element widely used to form an adaptive façade is the exterior movable shading device (EMSD). This
study focuses on the changes in the view factors and movements of the adaptive façades of various
shading devices. To calculate the diffuse solar heat gain through an adaptive façade, the combination
of the exposure coefficient (C ) and view factor (VF) was proposed as a major shading factor. The solid
angle method was adopted to calculate unshaded view factors. The two‐directional folding shade was
then evaluated using the proposed method. The result of the application shows that combining the
C and VF can reflect the step‐by‐step movement of the dynamic shade to calculate hourly diffuse
solar heat gain. We believe the proposed method can be applied to the process of calculating total
solar heat gain and whole building simulations.
