2. Kaminagao Terrace as a Third Place
Third place generally means a cozy third place where home and work are separated. Ray
Oldenburg, who first advocated its importance, describes the eight characteristics of third place as
“regular”, “conversational activities”, “another home” [4]. The cafe on the first floor of Kaminagao
Terrace became the manager of MS. A, who had experience working at a restaurant and was a longtime
acquaintance with the owner (Table 1). She painted the walls after the cafe opened, she established a
home‐like atmosphere. The daughter of store manager A came in saying “Iʹm home” to MS A. After
that, a regular man who always sits at the counter seat asked A about todayʹs closing time, participated
in a conversation with Mr. Aʹs daughter and replied, “It was 17:00,” and a regular man replied, “Thank
you” (Fig.4). From this episode, it can be seen that the cafe on the first floor has a cozy atmosphere as
if you are at home for a regular customer, and it is a place where you can talk naturally. In this way,
Kami‐Nagao Terrace plays a role as a third place for attractive communication in the “adjacent area”
adjacent to the “neighboring area” of the elementary school level.

“You're still doing? Till what time?” She replied to him, "until
5pm." He smiled and said, "Thank you." He then sat down at
the counter and told MS A, “My friend and my wife got an
international marriage and their daughter is an interesting
