to the understanding of BIPV technologies as systems that meet energy efficiency needs in conjunction
with their construction function.
3.3. The Brazilian studies
Numerous studies have been developed internationally on BIPV but comparatively few reference
studies on the subject are still available in Brazil. A Systematic Literature search was developed to
identify the approach addressed in studies developed in Brazil, covering a period of ten years (2009–
2018), and focusing on the subareas “architecture”, “engineering” and “energy”.
The selection of doctorate’s theses and master’s dissertations published in Brazil was obtained
from CAPES Brazilian Government Agency for Postgraduate Studies (CAPES), using the combination
of the terms: buildings AND integrated AND photovoltaic OR BIPV.
Papers published internationally by Brazilian researchers were also selected in relevant databases:
(buildings AND integrated AND photovoltaic OR BIPV) AND (Brazil OR Brasil), considering works written
in Portuguese, Spanish, and English.
The initial search selected 34 graduate studies that were filtered by abstract. 9 studies were
discarded because they dealt with photovoltaics present in buildings that could not be classified as
BIPV. The final selection identified 25 studies on the subject, 22 dissertations and 3 theses. The search
also identified 22 articles in journals, of which 4 were not available for online consultation. This review
considers the 18 remaining papers later filtered by topic of interest.
Figure 1a identifies the origin of Postgraduate studies by University while Figure 1b expresses a
chronological comparison of study production.

Postgraduate Studies
(a) (b)
Papers
Figure 1. (a) identifies the universities that generated selected Postgraduate studies; (b) comparison
between the quantity of postgraduate studies and papers produced in Brazil.
The evaluation by the origin of the studies indicates that the theme was studied in 12 Brazilian
universities located in 6 Brazilian states, showing that the theme has been studied in different regions
of the country and many research groups are involved.
The chronological assessment indicates that the edition of REN 482 and its revision REN 687 had
a direct impact on the increase of studies on the subject.
The filtering of works by topic shows that the studies are predominantly focused on performance
evaluations from simulations, which add up to 1 of the 18 works. Among the other works, 3 deal with
case studies conducted in BIPV facilities built in Brazil; 2 works are focused on aesthetic aspects and
architectural integration and 1 work is dedicated to viability economic aspects.
Data crossing considering the authorship of the works indicate that most of the authors did not
have the results of their research published in journals, showing that the sample of articles analyzed is
not representative of the scientific production developed in Brazil on the subject.
