1. Introduction
1.1. Research Background and Purpose
Since 2014, the Healthy Life Support Center has been streamlining the size and method of
installation in order to play a role as a local health facility centered on small living areas with the aim
of supporting the prevention of chronic diseases and the formation of healthy lifestyles among local
residents. It is a dedicated health care organization [1]. In 2019, the government announced that it
would increase the number of Healthy Life Support Centers from 66 to about 250 per dong community
by 2022 for prevention and health purposes with the aim of supporting the peopleʹs healthy lives [2].
To this end, more than 180 Healthy Life Support Centers will be established through new construction
or renovation within the next four years.
In the case of the Healthy Life Support Center, it is required to introduce new construction
methods such as the modular construction method in order to quickly and efficiently disseminate them
to more than 180 multi‐sites construction while maintaining the high quality required according to the
specificity of medical facilities. In the case of the modular construction method, multi‐site buildings can
be manufactured in the same factory, and the efficiency and quality of design and construction, the
rapid dissemination through shortening of construction period, and the economic efficiency of
economies of scale [3, 4]. It can be said that the possibility of application is high.
Recognizing this, the government is conducting a pilot project for two Healthy Life Support
Centers as an industrialization system that is manufactured at the same factory as the modular method
and installed at the site in the island area as pilot project name of ‘the performance enhancement model’
[2].
In order to quickly disseminate the Healthy Life Support Center using the advantages of the
modular construction method [5~9], it is required to present standard facilities for the space
composition of the Healthy Life Support Center. There is a lack of information on the design of modular
construction. In order to propose a standard facility using the modular construction method, it is
necessary to first identify the information (type, size, etc.) of common required spaces considering the
specificity of the building purpose, and then set an optimal basic modular unit. In addition, the basic
modular unit is integrated to unify the required spaces according to the required size (area, etc.), and
target two or more united modular units for required spaces where the spaces need to be linked. It must
go through the modularization process. Once the unitification and modularization of the required
spaces are completed, building design is possible by organically combining the unitificated and
modularized unit spaces according to the requirements of the ordering clients in different sites. In
addition to forecasts, it will help to reduce construction costs.
In order to do this, it needs to identify the relationship between the required space and the required
space by utilizing the architectural design guidelines suggested by the Ministry of Health and Welfare
or the information collected through case analysis, but there are limitations in identifying the
relationship between the required space. To compensate for this, it applied the Connectivity Analysis
Method of Space Syntax to the existing Healthy Life Support Center’s floor plan to quantify the
relationship between the space in each case as a spatial proximity and utilize it in the modularization
plan.
Therefore, the purpose of this study is to present a plan of unitificated units and modularized units
of necessary required spaces to cope with various site conditions and clientʹs requirements for the space
planning of the Health Life Support Centers applying the modular construction method. It provides
the basic data necessary for space planning and guide for applying the modular construction method.
1.2. Research Scope and Process
The scope of the study is limited to the Healthy Life Support Center among local health facilities,
and the case analysis targets 50 cases in operation excluding those currently under design or
construction as of 2018.
