and semi‐underground space (Figure 7‐b). As you see the Figure 7‐a, the parking space is located on
the first floor of the newly created space and the open space on the second floor. Through this, residents
with entrances on the second floor can freely use open spaces and green spaces, and the linkage
between the commercial facilities located on the first floor and the parking lot can be improved. It is
beneficial to make full use of the exterior space.
Figure 7. (a) Profile Analysis for West Part of Area A; (b) Profile Analysis for East Part of Area A
(Drawings by Author)
In the east part of the site, the 1 st floor is not used for commercial facilities so there parking space
can be set to be semi‐underground thereby making full use of the indoor to outdoor height difference
of about 500mm in the buildings there. Then the further depth needed for an underground parking
space is only 1.8m to meet the minimum parking space height of 2.2m [5] (Figure 7‐b).
Although the improvements mentioned above may not be the best way to solve the problems due
to massive underground construction being limited by the original building’s foundations and
overhead slabs, in addition, the coverage of vegetation will also bring about structural and technical
problems. So overhead slabs and semi‐underground parking should be the new direction for
remodeling these old housing complexes.
5. Conclusion
Due to Chinaʹs real estate‐related restrictions, some old housing complexes cannot be redeveloped.
We have seen that the residents of the Jixiang Housing Complex remodeled their houses privately,
however, the exterior spaces, which have no clear management, have problems such as parking,
garbage disposal, and exposure of commercial equipment. This is due to the external space not being
planned well when the Jixiang Housing Complex was built combined with the fact that daily life in
China has seen an abrupt change in recent years. Therefore, we propose to improve the outdoor space
by thinking three dimensionally to improve the overall dwelling environment. In our vision, the lower
floor is used as a parking lot and the floor above is used as both an open space and a green space,
thereby increasing the usability of the area. This method can increase the sustainability of old housing
complexes and be used as cornerstone of urban regeneration in the old town of Shenyang.
