Abstract: Since the ‘Reform and Opening‐up’ of China in the late 1970s, social mass construction of
residential buildings has progressed rapidly in Shenyang. The housing complexes built during this
time are outdated and the living environment has become worse over time as the residential
satisfaction has also dipped. Although individual households have been remodeled to improve their
residential performance and satisfaction until now the open and community spaces provided as well
as other important space for convenience, such as parking or trash processing spaces, in the exterior
space of the growing residential are not up to the standard required. Due to this great improvements
are necessary but these will be difficult to carry out. So in this study, an investigation into the exterior
space of the Jixiang Housing Complex in Shenyang was carried out. Improvement strategies and
implications for the living environment are also suggested. As a result our research, to tackle these
issues we suggest that 2 nd floor public space and semi‐underground space can be used for separate
public space and parking space. We also believe 3D parking and greening should be constructed to
make these old housing complexes more sustainable, these measures should go hand in hand with
the urban regeneration of the old city center in Shenyang.
