One residential unit was visited during researchers’ 2019 site visit. Unlike the Shipai urban village
residential units, this residential in Tangxia was comprised exclusively of units on the ground level.
Research by Liu and Gao in 2010 suggested that urban village has a high crime rate[13]; however,
during the site visit security cameras were noted to be ubiquitous, and Tangxia urban village
community seem to be a safe environment. Also, like most of the other urban villages, most of the
ground floor units are utilised for commercial purpose in Tangxia urban village.
The indoor conditions of the residential units were noted to be much better than Shipai’s during
this site visit (Figure 15 and Figure 16). With the same rental price, 900 RMB/month, the size of Tangxia’s
rental units were also much larger than Shipai’s. As a result of this affordability, most of the people
working inside the community also live in this urban village due to its low rental price and high
convenience. Finally, this community is not planned to be demolished anytime soon. Tangxia therefore
serves as a contrasting case study to the next community in this research (Xiancun village), which is
undergoing demolition and redevelopment.
