not allow for a comfortable living environment in a lot of the residential units in Shipai. For example,
due to the close distance between two buildings, some residents need to cover their window with non‐
transparent materials. Natural light then becomes inaccessible in these units, which as a result are not
envionmentally comfortable.

3.2 Tangxia urban village
Tangxia village, while having a similar development history with Shipai village in Tianhe district,
is not as close to the city centre as Shipai. However, it is close to the most prominent social housing
community in Guangzhou – the Tangyue Community (Figure 10). As a result, with the extensive
residential development within Tangxia urban village and social housing development around it,
Tangxia urban village developed a few vegetable and food markets that now offer produce to all these
residents. Residents from surrounding communities utilise most of the commercial developments
inside Tangxia village (Figure 11 to Figure 14).
