Abstract: The mechanical properties of energy saving materials are monitored by contactless
ultrasonic method. Phase change materials (PCM) has been investigated as a possible application to
construction materials in the concept of zero energy. In this paper, the application of PCM to concrete
with light weight aggregate shape (PCM‐LWA) is studied. Two experiments under controlled
temperature are performed to monitor mechanical behaviors of the plates. As a result, the elastic
modulus of the PCM‐LWA mortar plate at 48°C was about 56% lower than one at 24°C. Furthermore,
the decreased modulus is fully recovered after the plates are cooled down. Based on the results, we
conclude that that PCM‐LWA is possibly applied to concrete without permanent strength loss while
stress‐strain relationship is dramatically changed.
