WHY TELL STORIES AND WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM
TRADITIONAL STORYTELLERS?
Summary
Although storytelling traditions are different in different parts of the world, they
still have a lot in common. Discussing more familiar storytelling traditions such as
medieval troubadours and bards, as well as lesser known traditions such as
Polynesian Hula dancers, African traditions from Arab countries, West African
storytellers called Griot, and others, this paper will try to answer the question
what we can learn from traditional story tellers, that is, can their skills and
knowledges be a welcome addition to our work with children and young people.
Starting with the specificity of narrative, the paper will look for an answer to the
question why children need to be told stories today, what is the difference between
reading and telling stories, and what are the prerequisites for good storytelling.
Special attention will also be given to the choice of stories for telling
(appropriateness in terms of age, time, place, etc.), means of transforming a
written story into one that can be told, the possibilities of communicating with
children during and a%er the storytelling, as well as the storytelling performance
itself.
