Amazon Forever BioPark
LILAH CHOW
Hidden down winding roads and thick green
forests lies the Amazon Forever Biopark. This
conservation center is home to numerous
birds, mammals, reptiles, and fish, all seeking
refuge and protection from the cruel world
that hasn’t been so kind to these poor animals.
We ventured to this park to learn about the
animals that inhabit the rainforest and the
dangers they face every day. The Amazon Forever BioPark is a nonprofit organization that seeks to educate, preserve, and protect the natural environment of Peru. Wandering around the park, visitors can greet some dark Amazon River manatees in rehabilitation for various accidents and diseases caused by
nature and by humans. Farther down the path
one can find an array of parrots, parakeets, and other bright colorful birds. Many of these birds are confined to the park for life after having their wings clipped by the illegal animal trade. It is here we met a bonded pair of macaws, one red and one blue, a rare sight in the natural world as macaw usually only
mate with birds of the same colored feather.
We viewed their aquariums and hiked
through the park’s collections of statues and
characters that help teach children how to
preserve and protect the environment.
