dancing, a machete was passed around and we all took turns striking the stalk in hopes that it would fall and we could collect the goods that were tied on the upper part of the palm, it is a very similar experience to opening a pinata. Eventually, we were able to knock the palm down. We all ran over in excitement and collected the gifts the villagers generously prepared for us.
After that exciting celebration it was time for us to head back to our lodge however we were not ready to leave. We asked Mr. Rossi and Roldan if we could stay for just a little bit longer and play soccer with some of the kids. Luckily, they agreed. We all had a lot of fun. Soccer was another way we could connect with the villagers without verbally communicating. The whole time we were out there running around everyone was smiling and laughing; we were all happy.
Then we had to leave. We were all sad that our time with the people of Primero De Enero had to come to a close however we were grateful for the lifelong memories we made. As we walked out Mr. Rossi bought us all snow cones from Roldan’s father in law. With our snow cones in hand we said goodbye to the villagers and headed back to our boat.
The welcoming and joyful atmosphere that the villagers created in Primero De Enero had touched us all and we will never forget the kindness each and everyone of them showed us by sharing their space and community with us. We are forever grateful.
