During our time in the Amazon, we had the privilege of engaging in a cultural exchange initiative, through CONAPAC, within the Puinahua village. The people’s hospitality knew no bounds, igniting our collective excitement to collaborate. Our team worked closely with Michel, the CONAPAC representative, to facilitate this project, fostering hands-on participation with the local Puinahua residents.
The community, along with our thirteen-member group, was divided into four teams. Tasks ranged from painting classroom walls and staining furniture to beautifying the village landscape with gardening and installing netting to safeguard the lunchroom from insects. These diverse activities provided invaluable insights into the community dynamics.
The people warmly welcomed us into their lives with genuine enthusiasm. A highlight was the Umicha ceremony orchestrated by the Puinahua locals, where fruits and crafts hung from a tree while we joined them in a joyful dance. We took turns using a machete to chop at the tree until it fell to the ground. Then we harvested the offerings from the tree, symbolizing their boundless generosity. The Puinahua residents' exemplary organizational skills and unwavering work ethic left a profound impression, enriching our journey in Peru. Each encounter deepened our appreciation and left an undeniable mark, shaping us into better individuals as we departed from this enriching experience.
