For starters we ordered some dimsum as our appetizers for all of us. We ordered the siomai, beancurd roll, Hakaw and the Xiao Long Bao. The pork siomai and the beancurd roll were tasty and served hot, the Xiao Long Bao and hakaw on the other-hand were served after about 20 minutes and it was a bit cold too; The hakaw tasted fine but the Xiao Long bao was not satisfying. After the Dimsum we ordered the Birds nest soup with quail eggs. The soup was good, it was seasoned very well and there was enough soup for everyone in the table.
For the main dish we ordered the Sweet and sour Fish, Fried Frog Legs, Sze Chuan Style pork, Lemon Chicken, and the Mapo Tofu. Our starch was the large Yang Chow Fried Rice.
The Sweet and sour fish was delicious for me. The balance of both the sweetness and sourness was harmonious just like the texture of the fish was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
The Frog Legs was something I wasn’t really looking forward to eating but I am willing to try anything once. It was surprisingly delicious; the meat was weirdly soft and flavourful, I’d like to try them again next time but perhaps in a different way of cooking.
The Sze Chuan Style pork was a big disappointment for me because although it didn’t taste bad, it wasn’t anything special nor did it highlight any of the famous sze chuan flavors.
The Lemon Chicken was my favourite because I love lemon chicken! The Lemon chicken from Uno had a perfectly balanced sauce because it wasn’t too sweet but the breading of the chicken still had traces of uncooked flour which covered my lips.
The Mapo Tofu was the one dish that was least touched. I just had a taste of it and I found it to be plain with a salty sauce, it wasn’t bad but it is something I wouldn’t really crave for.
For our starch we just had to have the Yang Chow Fried Rice, such an iconic dish needed to be tried. For me it is the defining factor of whether a Chinese restaurant is good or not. Their Yangchow fried rice was delicious straight from its aroma to its taste. I could have eaten the fried rice all by itself even without all the other viands; the rice was separated from each other and there were no visible white parts as far as I could see.
Finally to put an end to an otherwise “filling” meal, we ordered the Mango Sango as the cherry on top of our proverbial icing. The mango sago was the perfect choice for our dessert because it was a cool and light dish for us to enjoy even after all the food we ate. Sweet and cold, it was a very refreshing dessert indeed. After eating our dessert I’ve had the chance to use their toilet facility and I’d say it smelled and looked clean which is a good indication of how clean they keep their restaurant. My overall experience with UNO restaurant was okay. Good food, an okay ambiance and a lacking service. I’d definitely like to go back to try their other dishes but it’s not somewhere I’d go out of my way for just to eat there, maybe when I’m around the area and find myself hungering for Chinese food I’d think of popping by.
