Yuma Review November 2014 | Page 2

Educational fun

Field trips have always been something exciting for children and even teenagers. Thoguh, when is it that students truly pay attention to the educational purposes behind the trip? Here in Yuma, Az we are lucky enough to have such rich culture and history. The Yuma Territorial Prison has been a part of Yuma since 1876 when the first 7 inmates entered and were locked into the new cells that they themselves had built.

(http://azstateparks.com/Parks/YUTE/index.html) The history is laid out in presentations throughout the entire museum. Personally, the most interesting display inside the museum is numerous pictures of the prisoners who used to be inmates inside the prison. Most of the inmates had their personal stories and nicknames attached with their picture, which is what made the display the most interesting.

Tours and a step back in time.

Scheduling a tour and or finding the information in order to become a part of one is extremely easy. The tour begins with the introduction of the guide and what will be learned throughout the tour. Most of the tour guides are Yuma residents who have grown up in the Yuma county and know the prison's history like the back of their hand.
