Byzantine church Saint Nicholas the Orphan
Thessaloniki is known for its Byzantine churches, in general. One of
them is Saint’s Nicholas the Orphan located in the northern part of the
city. It is not widely known but it is really worth visiting. It is called like
that because the church was said to be an orphanage. And the Saint is
the protector of the widows and the
orphan children.
It was built, in the 14 th century, out
of stones, and there are many murals
and mosaics inside. During the
Ottoman occupation, the mosaics
representing saints were destroyed,
but in 1960 Greeks restored it back
to its original form. Nowadays, it is a very beautiful, quiet and unique
church that you have to visit, it is surrounded by a beautiful green yard
which could be a nice stop for rest for any tourist of the area.
