2: A usually white male belonging to any of various sometimes violent youth gangs whose members have close-shaven hair and often espouse white-supremacist beliefs
Skinhead Culture emerged as a result of two shifts in British culture and society in the early to mid-1960. Firstly, the Mod scene which had been very popular amongst British youth had been split into two factions. The first of these factions were the middle class Mods who were able to carry on buying the latest Mod fashion, while this was unattainable for the working class Mods. This led to an emergence of what were called “Hard Mods” who marked themselves from their peers with shaved heads, jeans, braces, and working boots. This was the style they adopted and it was the typical style of working class British men at the time, and it separated them from their old Mod lifestyle, and from the ‘middle class hippies’ of their generation. It also served as a “conscious attempt by working class youth to dramatize and resolve their marginal status in class-based society”.
