Does the youth culture cause that conflict?
We are going to be looking at a number of different youth cultures throughout history in order to observe the ways in which they were involved in different confrontations and if this idea of youth culture goes hand in hand with conflict. Presenting the question: Can you have a youth culture without having conflict?
Throughout time, there has been many different youth cultures and subcultures amongst young people. They have obviously developed and evolved with the times. In this journal, we will look at the origins of youth culture, starting in the 1940s and 50s- movements such as the anti- Vietnam movement and the American Civil Rights movement.
We will then go on to look at the development of youth culture during the 60s - 80s and how the Mods and Rockers, Skinheads and Punks had such a huge impact upon youth culture. Here we will cover the obvious conflict between the Mods and Rockers, and the brawls between them and explore the Punk movement in further detail, looking into how it set the scene for Thatcherism and the rise against her with the Skinheads in the 1980's.
During the 90s, there was a big shift towards “lad” culture. Particularly within the music industry, which ultimately filtered through into the youth culture. However, this was also a time where androgyny and the new, new romantic movement of the 1990s was gaining pace.
Developing further to the present day; there is no way to define youth culture as a whole as there as so many different subcultures within the youth of today. Nevertheless, throughout the duration of this journal we will touch upon a number of issues concerning mental health, sexuality, and the impact of social media and technology, subcultures such as Hipsters, who were an integral part of youth culture.
