The FBI declared the Black Panther Party a communist organisation and an enemy of the state. COINTELPRO (Counter Intelligence Program), a programme conducted by the FBI, conspired with the Chicago State Police Department, resulting in the murder of Black Panther Party spokesman, Fred Hampton.
Hampton’s murder signifies the way in which the authorities silence political opposition. Before his death, Hampton was on the verge of unifying the BBP with several gangs, thus increasing the movement’s power and numbers. Therefore, it can be argued that the government viewed Hampton, as well as politically active youths, as a genuine threat to the establishment.
