“You’re not worth this anymore,” Charlotte
spat at me, a tsunami threatening to leak from
her exquisite mesclun eyes. I tucked a kiss into her
copper hair, then left for work. My shift started in
18 minutes and as my boss often shrieked, “Early
is on time, on time is late and late is unac-fucking-
ceptable!!”
When I got home with a tub of Cherry
Garcia (Char’s favourite) and a dozen waffle
cookies from the yummiest brand, everything
she couldn’t replace was gone, except the two-
cushion couch with a suede cerulean cover her
grandmother (whose eyes used to crinkle the
same way) gave to her.
I told Charlotte one thing I loved about
