Louise Spiegler teaches history at Cascadia
and English at UWB. Her first novel, The
Amethyst Road, was published in 2005, and
was a New York Public Library Book for the
Teenage, a School Library Journal selection
and a finalist for the Andre Norton Award
(Hugo-Nebula Award Scheme). The Jewel and
the Key, her second novel, was published by
Clarion in 2011. She says, “I wrote “Orkney” a
long time ago — in 1989, when I was twentyfour. I didn’t have an electronic copy, and had
to search for the typed manuscript in a pile of
books and papers in my basement. I liked the
idea of publishing something I wrote when I
was fairly young for a magazine produced
and edited by college students here at
Cascadia.”

Anne Tuominen is a professor, a woman,
a parent, an instructional designer, a
multilingual immigrant. She is a keen observer
of the social world, and her favorite seat in
a restaurant or at a park is always the one
with the widest possible view of that world
and the people in it. Her aesthetic sense is
captivated especially by the social world’s
physical artifacts: the colors, shapes, and
textures of humankind’s creations. Follow

My name is Jessie and I’ve been writing since
I could hold a pencil. I have boxes and boxes
full of journals that I’ve kept since I was five
years old. Writing is not a career for me—it is
a release from daily life, and an expression.
There are some times when I don’t even
know how I feel about something until I start
writing, and subconscious personality comes
out. It is truly a beautiful thing because it is
almost like getting to know my inner self.

At least once a week I’ll go out for a drive
randomly, not knowing where I’m going, but
always bringing my camera. Somedays I’ll go
out there and I won’t find a thing, however on
other days, I’ll find these incredible places I’ve
never seen before, and get some great shots.
