D SHOT You have now made your swing and hit your shot and you can guarantee one of two things will have happened: • Y ou will have got what you wanted or close to it Your ball is now sitting in the exact position you wanted it to finish or at least close to it, if this is the case do this: It is easy to react in a positive manner after a good result, standing tall and proud and receiving the plaudits from your fellow golfers. But did you learn anything? Likewise after a bad shot it is easy to react in a negative way, turning away and not watching the ball, stress levels rise as you watch where the ball has finished or they rise as you ask your playing partners “did you see where my ball finished”. But did you learn anything? If you did not learn anything from either shot, then how are you going to improve? • S MILE, you achieved what you wanted. Appreciate what part of the ball you hit, the quality of the contact and the angle of the clubface when you hit the ball and remember to SMILE! It is unrealistic to think you can learn only when practicing and then go to the golf course and hoping to play well. You spend more time on the golf course than you do on the practice area or driving range, why not use the golf course as a learning space too! • O r you ended up with something else… Your ball did not finish where you wanted, if this is the case do this: The challenge with using the practice area or driving range for learning is that it does not resemble the golf course. In other sports you practice where you play, in golf you don’t. • A ppreciate what part of the ball you hit, the quality of the contact and the angle of the clubface at impact when you hit the ball, and remember to SMILE. Learning is also ‘state dependent’, you need to be in the same state to have access to the information you have learnt. In practice you are relaxed because there is always another ball to hit, this is not the case on the golf course, where the stress levels may be higher and the range of emotions you experience will tire you mentally and physically. You will see the similarity in the above examples of how to react if you do indeed get what you want or if you unfortunately get something else. The reason for this is simple, you need to maintain your attitude and behave in a manner conducive to learning. Being able to maintain your state, your emotional integrity and strength while you are playing is an essential part of the game for learning and success in sport, business and life.
