THE TEE BOX | YOUR PRO THOUGHTS DON’T FORGET THE PRO PETER DAWSON The younger generation are growing up with a lot of gadgets to teach them how to play golf, but don’t forget get the importance of your club pro. It may start as early as 5 years. Group lessons at the local driving range or the local golf club are a great way for them to get a feel of the sport. As Jack Nicklaus was quoted as saying “a kid grows up a lot faster on the golf course, golf teaches them how to behave” The youngster today thanks to Mum and Dad can have lessons from a PGA professional either in groups or individually. These formative years are so vital. The youngsters have to be taught the correct foundations. Without these there will be no future in the game for them! At around 10 years old the youngsters need to join the local golf club where there will hopefully be good practice facilities. After competing in competitions they will achieve a handicap, the first rung of the ladder, but it’s not just about looking at the card and taking an average, a good club pro knows his golfers and can interpret a card based on more than just the numbers that are jotted down.
