If you know golf then you know Lee
Westwood. We caught up with the
former world no.1, multiple tour and
Ryder Cup winner during the final
weeks of the FedEx Cup and got his
thoughts on his season, his game and
the run in to the Ryder Cup.
You finished 2014 on a high, with some good
results and wins leading you in to 2015, what
were your goals for this year and have you
achieved them?
“I just want to put myself in a position where I
can compete as often as possible. I’d like to have
done that more than I have but there are still
some big tournaments to come and I’m quite
happy with my game. I used to set goals but now
all I want to do is just improve all the time.”
Your stats are a little down on 2014, where do
you think the weaknesses have been in your
game this year, and once they are identified
how do you fix them?
“There have probably been different things
in different weeks but there’s nothing I’m
particularly working on. You’re always trying to
improve every area. There have been weeks
where I would have liked it to have been hotter
but overall I’m pleased with my putting over the
course of the year.”
You have had great success in recent years on
the Asian Tour but only 1 top ten on the PGA
Tour, are the courses in that area more suited to
your game than in the US & Europe?
“I wouldn’t say that necessarily. I’m proud that,
from a relatively early age, I’ve played and won all
over the world. I’ve done really well in Asia over
the years but, no matter where I am, I’ll always
back myself to be a factor in a tournament.”
What’s been the highlight of your year so far?
“I’m hoping it’s still to come! I showed a bit of
form at the start of the year but, like last year, I’m
confident I can finish well.”
What’s the hardest course you’ve played on the
Tours this year and why?
“Chambers Bay was an interesting test but we
all had plenty to say about that at the time!
France was tough too and it will certainly be
interesting coming down the stretch in the
Ryder Cup in 2018.”
