Your Server Rack Buying Guide Jul. 2014 | Page 4

Shelving If you have electronic equipment that isn’t rack-mountable, you’ll need to invest in shelving. You have a number of options when it comes to server rack shelves: adjustable or fixed shelves, media shelves, sliding keyboard shelves and vented, heavy-duty or cantilever shelves. When considering size, choose a shelf that has a depth of six inches less than the total depth of the rack – so if you have a 30-inch deep cabinet, go for a shelf with a depth of 24 inches. Panels Top panels protect your equipment from external materials and debris. With top paneling, you can include perforated slots for added ventilation, mounting for exhaust fans and grommet holes for auxiliary cable management. Side panels provide security and are available as solid-fixed, solid-removable and solid with vents (louvered). If you’re still unsure or confused about the server rack buying process, don’t be disheartened. It’s natural – there are a lot of components and considerations to keep in mind, after all.
