“Bakkies” Botha, who’s real name is John Philip got
his nickname at a young age when people started
calling him Bakkies and it stuck.
Bakkies” Botha, (born 22 September 1979
in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal Province) is
a South African rugby union player who
played as a lock for the Springboks until
22 November 2014. He played for the
under-19 and under-23 Springbok sides
before being chosen for the South African
A team.
He is one of the world’s most decorated
rugby players who won the 2007 Rugby
World Cup with South Africa. He was
nicknamed The Enforcer for his extremely
physical style of play.
He was suspended for 9 weeks after
headbutting All Black halfback Jimmy Cowan
in 2010.
SA Rugby Player of the Year nominee, for 2003,
2004 & 2005. He holds the World record with
Victor Matfield for most tests as a lock combination in the starting line-up (56) The “Enforcer” in
the Springbok pack, Botha is widely regarded as
the best No 4 lock in the world, displaying a very
high work rate and high level of physicality at the
contact points. He is a born leader and motivates
those around him with his no holds barred approach
to the game. He is a powerful ball-carrier, provides a
go-to option at the front of the lineout and operates
well as a support player, possessing solid handling
and anticipatory skills. Further more Bakkies
has won numerous titles including the
2007 Rugby World Cup in France,
2009 Test Series against the
British & Irish Lions, 2004
and 2009 Tri Nations, 2007,
2009 and 2010 Super14.
