This hour long surgery involves injecting acrylic bone cement into the fracture to create a type of internal cast.. Following the procedure the patient is usually free to return home on the same day, and benefits from significant pain reduction and reduced recovery time (as opposed to traditional surgical methods where an open incision is made under general anaesthetic). Kyphoplasty is similar to Vertebroplasty in that it is a minimally invasive surgery that again takes around an hour to perform and offers significant pain relief with minimal hospital stays. Again, it is used primarily to treat those suffering from painful spinal fractures caused by osteoporosis. The method involves using x-ray to insert a balloon into the vertebrae which is then gently inflated to elevate the fracture and allow a normal position to be resumed. In doing so, a cavity is created which is then injected with a type of bone ‘cement’ that then stabilises the bone in its new position. © dissoid - stock.adobe.com We are the Stroke Association We believe in life after stroke Relief for common conditions In addition to playing a prominent role in developing new techniques to improve outcomes for patients with complex spinal conditions, Mr Shafafy also helps those suffering from more common complaints such as disc prolapse, disc degeneration or spinal stenosis. In treating these conditions, he tries to employ less or minimally invasive techniques to control the symptoms such as pain in the back, buttocks or leg, and sciatica until the natural history of such conditions which is often resolution of symptoms prevail. In doing so, he utilizes spinal injection and in certain and suitable cases percutaneous laser and radiofrequency treatments. Mr Shafafy and the team of 10 multidisciplinary surgeons at the Centre for Spinal Studies at Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham treat around 12000 out-patient episodes (not requiring surgical treatment) and perform 1200 major spinal surgeries per year. Mr Shafafy is often able to identify and recommend alternative treatments and surgical options for those with ongoing spinal issues, and in addition to his NHS commitments sees private patients at a selection of locations across the East Midlands and London.
