One of the most popular contests was the Concrete
Canoe Competition. ASCE student organizations
around the nation have been involved in constructing
and racing concrete canoes since the early 1970s. One
of the objectives of the canoe competition is to provide
civil engineering students an opportunity to gain
hands-on, practical experience and leadership skills
by working with concrete mix designs and practicing
project management. It is also intended to foster
an understanding of civil engineering as a dynamic
and innovative profession. Support of the School
of Engineering provides opportunities for future
engineers to acquire classroom knowledge and apply
it in the field.
“
As a veteran student, taking part in the concrete canoe
competition helps me relate to the Corps and make
connections I might otherwise not make. Belonging to the
American Society of Civil Engineers and participating in
this competition also gives me hands-on experiences that
help me to prepare for my civilian career.

The Citadel School of Engineering
The Citadel’s student chapter of the American Society
of Civil Engineers (ASCE) hosted the 2014 Carolinas
Conference this spring. ASCE holds an annual
regional conference that rotates from college to college.
During the conference, students networked, learned,
and put their technical knowledge to the test through
a series of competitions held throughout the three-day
gathering. Civil engineering students and faculty from
ten institutions in the region participated.
