relationship that we share amongst each other . My mother kind of hated us talking about business every time we ’ d get together . She finally had to put her foot down and say , ‘ We ’ re going to talk about some family stuff !’”
When Dr . Cynthia and her husband Dr . Andrew Hummel first started dating , they discovered something in common : her uncle , Dr . Tony , was treating Dr . Andrew for a wrestling injury . Dr . Andrew said his experience with Dr . Tony helped influence his decision to become a chiropractor . After Dr . Cynthia and Dr . Andrew graduated from high school , they earned their undergraduate degrees at Life U before completing the D . C . program . The pair now practices in Brookville and Tipp City , Ohio where Dr . Marcus has joined them since graduating . The other chiropractors in the family also practice in the Dayton area .
Among the members of the family that couldn ’ t be present at the event were Dr . Heidi Olson , Dr . Cynthia ’ s cousin , and Dr . Ryan Shank , Dr . Robert ’ s son-in-law , who also came to Chiropractic after a sports injury and learned about the profession and chiropractic philosophy from the Shaffer ’ s .
“ We have a fun job , getting to see people and helping them ,” Dr . Robert said . “ We ’ re one of the few doctors where a patient can come in and leave feeling better . That patient before would have to go the doctor , get a prescription , wait in line at a pharmacy and hope the side effects don ’ t cause any issues .”
Dr . Marcus won ’ t be the last member of the family to pursue Chiropractic . His brother , Peter , is now in the D . C . program at Life U and is dual enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Biology . Their cousin Riley Shaffer is also in the D . C . program .
“ To walk by the Generations Wall and see the nameplates as I go to class , it ’ s going to be very motivational and inspiring to me ,” Peter said .
“ I ’ m very proud of Marcus and very happy for him ,” Riley said . “ Looking at him , I ’ m very envious to be in his shoes — I have a ways to go , but it ’ s nice seeing the names on the wall . We always talk about how we have so many chiropractors in the family , but seeing everybody here and all their names is pretty exciting .”
