Drs . Carhee Making LASTING IMPACT in Their Community

Life University had the opportunity to speak with Life U alumni Dr . Winston Carhee ( class of 2003 ) and Dr . Chantaye Carhee ( class of 2007 ) to discuss the impact they have been making in their community through their chiropractic practice . The married couple met while attending Life U as members of the Student Black American Chiropractic Association ( SABCA ). Drs . Carhee own and operate two chiropractic practices , one in Atlanta and the other in Fayetteville , Georgia .
Q : How did you decide Chiropractic was the profession you wanted to pursue when trying to find a career path ?
A : Winston : I was a senior at Morehouse [ University ] trying to find my way and where I wanted to go . I have a unique story . I started in research science and was involved in internships over the summer . This gave me experience in the research laboratory and led me to the realization that I preferred interacting with individuals rather than interacting with test tubes or crunching numbers .
That led me to pursue a career dealing with individuals . I thought I wanted to be a medical doctor , but even then , I did not want to prescribe medication or rely on surgery . Through interactions with the medical doctor I was shadowing , and through experiences with drug representatives , I very quickly realized this system was not the system I wanted to participate in . I decided to go a different route in health care / medicine and researched doctor of osteopathy . I enrolled in a contingency program and realized the program had nothing in it as far as osteopathic manipulation , which is what interested me .
So , after going through that summer program and being admitted into New York College of Osteopathic Medicine , I realized I did not want to practice like that either , because that was not my ideal . I took a semester working at Morehouse School of Medicine . I was researching my options , and that ’ s when I located Life University . My epiphany was there was no drugs and no surgeries , but there was help for people and families . And lo and behold , that ’ s what Life University is about . I could be a doctor in four years and come right out and practice .
I knew a little bit about Chiropractic . I ’ d seen it . But I worked at a school to experience and see what it would be like . I saw people carrying jugs of water , and I saw doctors [ of chiropractic ] who looked healthy . I said , “ you know what ? That ’ s what I would like my future to be .” So , that ’ s when I decided to enroll in Life University .
I was born and raised in Atlanta , and Life University is right here in Marietta . I really didn ’ t know about the profession of Chiropractic until that time in my life when I was trying to find my career path , and thank goodness I did . That was my road to Chiropractic . I tell everybody … Chiropractic chose me . I knew I wanted Chiropractic , but I didn ’ t know exactly what Chiropractic was until I found it . It led me to that road . It was the best decision I ever made .

Q : Is there a specific reason you chose to pursue your calling at Life University ?
A : Winston : I ’ m a native of the metro Atlanta area . I was born and raised in the area and have strong family ties . Both my mother [ and I ] were staying at home while I was going to Morehouse College , and I stayed at home when I attended Life University . Location was very important [ to me ]. Life University ’ s philosophy led me to know that this was the place for me . The strong philosophy that Life U has gravitates , and it pulls people toward it .
