Miss Trinidad and Tobago Universe 2004 Danielle Jones- Hunte is back in the spotlight to bolster the fight against breast cancer.
Her efforts to achieve this takes the form of a signature charity fund-raiser simply titled The Pink Tea, with the theme Volume.
Plans for the second annual event were unveiled at the popular fashion boutique known as the Little Black Dress at the Falls at West Mall, Westmoorings on September 18.
There it was revealed that this year’ s edition of The Pink Tea will take place on October 22 at Chaud Café located at One Woodbrook Place, St James. Start time is 4pm. Guests and fashion muses sent by designers from across the country, will walk the pink carpet and enjoy tea under tents provided by Party and Events Limited.
In summing up the concept and intent of the initiative Jones- Hunte said,“ Breast Cancer in T & T, we’ re coming for you!”
Guests are encouraged to wear touches of pink, while muses will wear their designer’ s interpretation of the theme‘ Volume’.
Trend Media, which trades as Loop, has signed as the official media partner for The Pink Tea. Judging from the tremendous support the event received last year from the local media, there is no doubt that this edition will again win the attention of the respective newsroom.
“ The only‘ cure’ for breast cancer is early detection, and that’ s what we will be seeking to promote through this years’ Pink Tea which is more than an event, it’ s a positive movement,” the former beauty queen declared.
Jones-Hunte went on to explain her decision to apply a social media and pink carpet aspect to the event.
“ Trinidad and Tobago has a very high social media penetration rate. It was important that the event engaged a wider audience than the few who can afford to donate – especially in these challenging economic times. Viewers will not just see fashion, or people who are“ slaying”, they will see people, young people, actively engaged in fundraising, hear messages about how simple acts like a breast self-exam in the shower can save lives and see women who have survived breast cancer, and are alive to tell the tale,” she said.
Proceeds from this year’ s edition of The Pink Tea will go to Associates of the Radiotherapy Centre( ARC).
It was Jones-Hunte’ s aunt Beverly Jones who reminded her of the excellent work done by the ARC in St James. Incidentally, Jones-Hunte accompanied her late mother Denyse Jones many times to the ARC to meet her support group during her battle with cancer.
Even though Jones has committed the funds raised from this year’ s event to ARC, she continues to support the unswerving efforts of the Trinidad and Tobago Cancer Society which benefitted from last year’ s inaugural Pink Tea Event.
“ I am thrilled to announce today that partners of The Pink Tea will be running various Pink Tea 2017 promotions at their businesses and will send funds directly to the Trinidad and
Tobago Cancer Society or offer discounts to event supporters. In line with TTCS requirements, none of these entities are alcohol or tobacco companies.”
Last year 20 per cent of Pink Tea attendees indicated they had breast health screenings / conversations with their medical providers regarding breast cancer prevention following the event. This year Jones-Hunte hopes to double that number – not only with those in attendance, but by those who will be exposed to the brand via these promotions
