Mega drill in Delhi to test quake readiness D elhi witnessed one of the biggest coordinated drills on 15th February 2012, with disaster management agencies checking the alertness and preparedness of various other agencies in the event of an earthquake of 7.2 magnitude rocking the capital. The drills were conducted in several places including offices, schools, market places and the Metro stations across the national Capital by the National Disaster Management Authority and Delhi Disaster Management Authority at 11.30 a.m. The drill’s motive was to check the preparedness of the agencies in the event of an earthquake with a high intensity of 7.2 on Richter scale. Six metro stations were closed for over half-an-hour and road traffic in many areas in Central, South and North Delhi were also diverted. They created a number of simulated situations like collapse of flyovers, crack in metro pillars, damage to hospitals and collapse of residential buildings. Officials from all the important emergency support functionary departments like police, MCD, DMRC, Health department, Delhi Jal Board and Food and Civil Supplies have been coordinating with senior officials of all the nine districts to make the drill a success.
