Cutting to blocks : The large slate blocks extracted from the quarry are cut into thick blocks with same length and width of the final slates be produced . Splitting to pieces : Experienced workers split each block into pieces with thickness twice of the final slates , then these pieces are then split in half to required thickness . Trimming or beveling the edges : The cut edges of each slate are trimmed or beveled in order to facilitate the passage of water over the slate once in place on the roof . Drill and further fabrication : The methods of slate roof installation are developed , such as nail fixing , hook and aluminum profile , drilling and further fabrication on slates can be optionally done .
